If we had a couple of quid for every time I\u2019d heard that, or something like it, we\u2019d barely have to work every again.<\/p>\n

The thing is though, it misses the point.<\/p>\n

In today\u2019s world it\u2019s not a question of \u201cthe real job plus…\u201d because the soft skills are<\/strong> the real job.<\/p>\n

Technical skills alone don\u2019t cut it. Technical skills alone don\u2019t differentiate you from the competition. Technical skills these days are taken as a starting point. They\u2019re the baseline, they\u2019re a given.<\/p>\n

These days the differentiator is the so-called \u2018soft skills\u2019.<\/p>\n

Make no mistake, by the way, soft skills are hard – but that\u2019s a different issue, perhaps.<\/p>\n

Think about it… if there are two people in front of you and both of them can do their job, which of them are you going to pick? The one who can talk about his job, too, of course.\u00a0 And if everyone can do the job but only one of them can talk about it?<\/p>\n

You get the idea, I\u2019m sure.<\/p>\n

So what’s the point? The point is that anyone who wants to get on in their job – particularly if that job isn’t simple repetitive\/mechanical work – needs to up their game. The kinds of training you need to do your job aren’t the kinds of tools you need in management and leadership.<\/p>\n

What got you here won’t get you there.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
