{"id":1031,"date":"2011-05-14T17:12:18","date_gmt":"2011-05-14T16:12:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.elementally.co.uk\/presentation-skills-blog\/?p=1031"},"modified":"2011-05-14T17:12:18","modified_gmt":"2011-05-14T16:12:18","slug":"womans-hour-presentation-passion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.awareplus.co.uk\/presentation-skills-blog\/womans-hour-presentation-passion\/","title":{"rendered":"Woman&#8217;s Hour: Presentation Passion!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>The (wonderful &#8211; am I allowed to say that?) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/radio4\/features\/womans-hour\/\">Woman\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Hour on BBC Radio Four<\/a> recently ran a brief article about business presentations. \u00c2\u00a0Both interviewees were absolutely adamant that in the kind of presentations they were being given, passion was absolutely critical.<\/p>\n<p>They\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re right, it is, so I thought I&#8217;d write a very quick blog response.<\/p>\n<p>Without passion your presentation will be boring and if <strong>you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re<\/strong> not passionate about your subject, why the heck should your audience be?<\/p>\n<p>But passion isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t enough. \u00c2\u00a0It needs to be backed up by a certain amount of technique. After all, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IMgyi57s-A4\">Phill Davison\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s presentation<\/a> had plenty of passion &#8211; but his presentation sucked (badly!).<\/p>\n<p>I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m not saying that to make a great presentation you need to be the greatest technical presenter in the world, but you do need enough to let your passion show, so to speak. Without technique, your passion will just get in the way.<\/p><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>There&#8217;s no point being the most passionate musician in the world if you can&#8217;t play the right notes.<\/p>\n<p>Let me try an analogy and see if you like it&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>For me, presenting is a bit like driving. \u00c2\u00a0When you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re learning to drive you concentrate so very hard on not crashing the car you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve not got any \u00e2\u20ac\u02dchead space\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 left to deal with anything else &#8211; such as talking to your passenger, glancing at the scenery, following roadsigns or navigation. \u00c2\u00a0In other words, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s all you can do to control the car&#8230; <strong> so you can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t think about where you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re going.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Once you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re better at controlling the vehicle itself, you can concentrate on where you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re going, why you&#8217;re going there and so on.<\/p>\n<p>Presentation technique is like driving the car. \u00c2\u00a0The idea is to get good enough at it to be able to let it take car of itself so that you can concentrate on the other stuff &#8211; things that are analogous to thinking about where you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re driving to and what you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re going there for. \u00c2\u00a0In other words, the content of your presentation&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6. and yes, letting the passion out! \u00c2\u00a0;)<\/p>\n<p>You don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t need to be able to drive like Jenson Button, but you <strong>do<\/strong> need to be able at least pass your driving test!<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The (wonderful &#8211; am I allowed to say that?)
