{"id":1106,"date":"2011-10-26T18:18:21","date_gmt":"2011-10-26T17:18:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.elementally.co.uk\/presentation-skills-blog\/?p=1106"},"modified":"2011-10-26T18:18:21","modified_gmt":"2011-10-26T17:18:21","slug":"professionals-not-just-the-presenter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.awareplus.co.uk\/presentation-skills-blog\/professionals-not-just-the-presenter\/","title":{"rendered":"Professionals &#8211; not just the presenter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Bit of a rant about some bad presenters I&#8217;ve seen recently&#8230;..! \u00c2\u00a0:) \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0Brace yourself, gentle reader.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>____________________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p>I drive a car, and (like most people, impossibly) I think I&#8217;m a better than average driver. \u00c2\u00a0Setting aside the simple fact that <strong>most<\/strong> people think they&#8217;re above average as a driver, which can&#8217;t be true, by definition, I&#8217;d not tell my mechanic how to mend my car or how to tune it.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve used the same mechanic for a lot of years now &#8211; and we know he does a good job &#8211; so let him do it.<\/p>\n<p>I can use a computer, pretty well, but I don&#8217;t tell the coders at Google&#8217;s coders how to do their jobs.<\/p>\n<p>So why is it that some presenters think they know better than the technical support \u00c2\u00a0provided in venues to operate equipment? \u00c2\u00a0Sure, a professional and experienced presenter will know what he or she wants and there are certainly venues where the technical support is rubbish&#8230; but the <strong>typical<\/strong> presenter knows his material and the <strong>typical<\/strong> house technician know his (or her) job.<\/p>\n<p>If you do a sound check and they tell you you need to hold the mic closer, then hold your mic closer. \u00c2\u00a0By all means ask them to clarify why they&#8217;re saying that, &#8216;cos you might be as sixes-and-sevens&#8230; but if you, or the conference organiser, has paid good money for good technical support, why tell that good technical support how to do their jobs?<\/p>\n<p>How would you feel if they started telling you that you should change your slides with a different transition?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bit of a rant about some bad presenters I&#8217;ve seen recently&#8230;..! \u00c2\u00a0:) \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0Brace yourself, gentle reader. ____________________________________________________________ I drive a car, and (like most people, impossibly) I think I&#8217;m a better than average driver.
