Why do so many otherwise smart people rush to their computers and fire up PowerPoint (or Keynote) when they&#8217;re required to make a presentation? And what should they do instead?<\/p>\n<p>Design in analogue<\/p>\n<p>Simple.<\/p>\n<p>Honestly, it&#8217;s simple.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"http:\/\/presentation-skills-blog.co.uk\/2012\/12\/the-slides-are-not-the-presentation\/east_of_eden\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1825\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1825\" title=\"east_of_eden\" src=\"http:\/\/presentation-skills-blog.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/east_of_eden.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"252\" height=\"213\" \/><\/a>Once you get the concept that the slides are not the presentation (just a tool) you start to use Powerpoint in a totally different way. \u00a0Imagine if Steinbeck had been more concerned with how pretty his pen was rather than the story or characters in East of Eden. Imagine if Mozart had been more bothered about his quill than his symphonies. Or what about if the gardener is more worried about how pretty his spade is than how pretty the garden?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not hard &#8211; honestly&#8230; but it <strong>is<\/strong> profound.<\/p>\n<p>What it means is that you do what all (well, all that I&#8217;ve spoken to at least) professional presenters or public speakers do &#8211; you&#8217;ll think about what you need to say first, before you start to worry about how you&#8217;re going to say it. That, as soon as you think about it, is self-evidently the right way to design something, isn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n<p>Admit it, you&#8217; know I&#8217;m right! :)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>in the same way that the pen is not the letter, or the novel.
