{"id":880,"date":"2011-01-14T09:29:27","date_gmt":"2011-01-14T08:29:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.elementally.co.uk\/presentation-skills-blog\/?p=880"},"modified":"2011-01-14T09:29:27","modified_gmt":"2011-01-14T08:29:27","slug":"presenting-for-geeks-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.awareplus.co.uk\/presentation-skills-blog\/presenting-for-geeks-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Presenting for Geeks (again!)  :)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve <a title=\"presenting for geeks 2\" href=\"http:\/\/www.curved-vision.co.uk\/presentation-skills-blog\/2010\/10\/presenting-for-geeks-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">written a couple of times<\/a> about how people with a computer-orientated job can improve their ability to talk to people in the &#8216;real world&#8217;. \u00c2\u00a0(I&#8217;m not quite sure what the real world is, but you need to work in it, so I&#8217;m told). \u00c2\u00a0A big idea for me is that being a Geek isn&#8217;t a bad thing: the world needs geeks. \u00c2\u00a0What <strong>is<\/strong> a bad thing however, is not being able to understand them.<\/p>\n<p>Generally speaking, I believe the responsibility for being understood lies with both parties but more with the &#8216;speaker&#8217; than the &#8216;hearer&#8217; (that could be writer\/reader etc too, of course) and all too often I find myself sitting through a presentation which talks about how hard it was to do X, Y and Z. \u00c2\u00a0Unless I&#8217;m also interested in learning how to do X, Y and Z I don&#8217;t care. \u00c2\u00a0I just want to see the end results.<\/p>\n<p>Cue a BBC programme (broadcast in the UK at 20:00 on BBC4, on Thursday 13th Jan, 2011). I&#8217;ve never met the presenter, but I bet I&#8217;d like him&#8230; \u00c2\u00a0Take a look at this short extract to see how he takes a huge amount of technical data and presents it in a way that&#8217;s visually engaging, easily understandable to anyone and, well, frankly, just fun! \u00c2\u00a0:)<\/p>\n<p>As Punch (of Punch and Judy fame) would say &#8220;That&#8217;s the way to do it!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"425\" height=\"350\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/kTSxo3175ec\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"425\" height=\"350\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/kTSxo3175ec\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>(For some reason I can&#8217;t understand, you might need to reload this page to get the video to show. Sorry!)<\/p>\n<p>What Hans Rosling does here is pretty cool. \u00c2\u00a0As an ex-researcher doing this kind of thing in Universities for two and a half decades I can make a very educated guess at the sheer amount of research time that went into this &#8211; hundreds of hours, for example, will have been spent just on getting hold of, validating and &#8216;cleaning&#8217; the data&#8230; but do you care, gentle reader? \u00c2\u00a0No, you don&#8217;t. \u00c2\u00a0And nore should you &#8211; this is all about presenting the data in a great way. \u00c2\u00a0Not, I&#8217;m sure, the only way to present that data, but nevertheless a great way.<\/p>\n<p>Did it work? \u00c2\u00a0Well judging by the amount of buzz online about it this morning, very much so! (http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b00wgq0l\/buzz)<\/p>\n<p>So what is it that Hans Rosling did?
