Breakthrough! with AwarePlus
Breakthrough! is a modular training programme - all the sessions stand alone but build together to give you a more complete and very robust training package. On this page you'll find an outline of the courses. Remember that modules are tweaked for you free and that you can have a customised module built especially for you, too!
the delegating and motivating module looks at...
- critical models of delegation
- knowing when to Delegate - and when not
- methods of appropriate delegation
- diffent approaches to motivating staff
- detailed techniques for motivating staff
- key pit-falls to avoid when motivating and delegating
Delegation and motivation go hand in hand: when you delegate tasks you're potentially able to achieve a lot more both in the short term (more tasks done) and in the long term (more developed staff) but it's critical you do it right. Offloading the task to someone else is
not 'true' delegation and you're still responsible for the task's completion and quality. It's important you delegate to people who are motivated (and able!) to do things at least as well as you'd do them yourself.
the confidence and assertiveness module looks at...
- key ideas of what confidence is
- long term methods of developing confidence
- immediate techniques for appearing more confident in the short term
- the difference between assertiveness, passivity and aggression
- very specific ways of sounding and acting more assertively
- understandings of what level of assertiveness is appropriate
Confidence is about being able to do what needs to be done, even if we're not feeling 100% sure about things. It's often mistaken for a lack of nerves but this is a fallacy: not being nervous is simply being sure that nothing will go wrong, where-as being confident is about knowing you can handle it, even if it
does go wrong. Given that "nothing can go wrong" isn't exactly common in the real world, confidence is more important than a lack of nerves.....
the negotiating module looks at...
- understanding your current negotiating paradigm, its strengths and weaknesses
- alternative models of negotiating
- "dirty tricks" - and how to side-step them
- techniques for following clearly structured processes for negotiating
- models for improving the chance of a win-win negotiation
- methods for knowing when to "walk away"
Negotiating is part of every-day life, but in the business world it's the very life-and soul of the organisation: all too often personalities dominate how we negotiate and yet time and time again research clearly demonstrates that the most robust approaches are not random but rather are the results of following clearly defined policies and practices.
the team working and leadership module looks at...
- different detailed models of teamworking
- various applied concepts of leadership
- key concepts such as team-building
- detailed techniques of different leadership styles
- dealing with a 'toxic team'
People work in teams as necessary - and yet we often overlook the effect on productivity that the structure and style of the team can have. A well lead and correctly structured team needs less management effort and has a higher productivity. On the other hand, a poorly designed team or an inappropriately led one can result in higher staff turnover, lower productivity and continually needing to spend management time on "fire-fighting".
the presenting and pitching module looks at...
- algorithms for deciding when to make a presentation and what to target
- structuring presentations to maximise what your audience remembers
- mechanisms to control nerves and appearing confident
- designing slides and integrating audio-visual aids
- voice projection to sound assured, confident and credible
- systems for designing presentations more quickly
- exercises for improving clarity and ease of understanding
- systems fordealing with questions
- approaches for improvising when time to prepare is short or unavailable
Some of the techniques used here (for voice projection and handling nerves etc) were developed at the Royal Shakespeare Company and other places by Cicely Berry and others. Integrating these methods into the more 'expected' approach of simply designing presentations is what makes this module unique to us.
the minimising your stress and managing your staff's module looks at...
- the difference between stress and pressure - and what is meant by both
- the basics of the legal situation about stress at work
- how to recognise stress and its onset
- techniques for dealing with it once you've identified it
- methods for reducing the longer-term chances of stress arising in the first place
Stress is often cited as the most common cause of long term absence from work, costing companies extensively... not to mention the unmeasured costs of human unhappiness and lost productivity. Yet when people are better equipped to recognise the early symptoms and take appropriate action, they become more robust and productive at relatively little cost to employers.
the emotional intelligence module looks at...
- some of the basic models of emotional intelligence
- a pragmatic definition of emotional inteligence
- the four steps towards emotional intelligence
- methods of improving our intra- and inter- personal skills
- examples of when and how to apply skills of emotional intelligence
There is no guaranteed way of getting on with people - but a lack of emotional intelligence (or EQ) is an almost guaranteed way of
not doing. Relatively simple models of understanding can radically improve people's understanding of themselves and each other in ways which dramatically improve productivity and reduce friction at work - which in turn reduced the need for managment intervention.
