Presenting tips for young speakers

A long time ago (really a loooong time ago!) I was asked what my top tip for presenting was. Normally I shudder when I’m asked this kind of thing because – and I’ll say this again and again and again until I die, I suspect – there is no silver bullet.

There isn’t just one tip that works.

If there was, why would I give it away, anyway! Once the magic secret is out I’d be out of a job. So like I say, I normally run from this kind of question. Three things changed my mind this time…

Firstly it was to be a collection of tips from different world experts. Secondly, it was to be an unconventional tip. Thirdly it was to be aimed at young speakers.

After an 18 month (really guys?! What happened?!) the result of Super Speaker’s trawl around the world is published here: http://www.superspeak.com.au/blog/17-tips-to-help-children-overcome-public-speaking-nerves#.UFLOBaRSTdw

It’s an eclectic mix of tips – and most of them I would happily go along with, not least because most of them centre around two main themes.

  • Nerves are normal. Live with it, use it and don’t fight it.
  • The tools you should use are the same tools as for adults and there’s no silver bullet.

See, told you I’m a genius! :)

Mind you, there are a couple of the same old boo-boos there too……! Other blog entries obviously don’t know that the VAK model isn’t real and things like that but… overal… If you’re in that part of the world, and you’re young and looking to up your game, in terms of speaking, I recommend you investigate Super Speak. I’m literally on the other side of the worlds so I can’t check them out in person, but it looks like a lot of fun!

On another note, I’ve also been asked to review PresentionFun – we’re playing with it as we type, so expect to see a review of that pretty soon, too.
